The road to pharmacy ownership: Ken Lai’s journey of dedication and achievement

08 April 2025

Ken Lai HeadshotGrowing up in Hong Kong, I was always fascinated by the man in the dispensary who was compounding medications to cure my ailment. I discovered that this man was called a pharmacist – or as he was more commonly referred to at the time, a chemist. To become a pharmacist myself, I studied chemistry and eventually entered university. I took great pride in my aspirations and in my studies to ensure that my dreams could come true.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Queensland, I worked at community pharmacies for a few years. This grew my eagerness to own a pharmacy of my own, as I realised that I could help my community in greater way. The journey has not been an easy one, as the pharmacy landscape has changed drastically since I first started. I've also had to adapt to the changes whilst maintaining my clinical background.

In 1986, I bought my first pharmacy in Caboolture. The Gold Cross logo caught my attention which led me join the Guild.

I have never regretted becoming a member of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia. The Guild has given me a sense of belonging to a body of pharmacy owners like me. I appreciate that it protects members and provides advice to all aspects of pharmacy ownership.

Now that my retirement is approaching, I will miss serving the community of Caboolture. I have gained so much friendship and support from my local community for over 40 years. Owning my pharmacy has given me the opportunity to train qualified pharmacy assistants and intern pharmacists. It has been a privilege to work alongside my son William for the last 10 years of my career. I am very grateful for the God-given opportunity of becoming both a pharmacist and pharmacy owner. It has been a joy to serve the community throughout my career.
