Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose or adverse reaction. It is administered by injection or delivered through a nasal spray and works by blocking opioid drugs from attaching to opioid receptors in the brain.
The Australian Government is investing $19.6 million over 4 years from 2022-23 to deliver the Take Home Naloxone (THN) program nationally. The THN Program will make naloxone free and available without a prescription to people who are at risk of, or who may witness, an opioid overdose or adverse reaction. The program was initially piloted in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia before being expanded nationally from 1 July 2022. More information about the Take Home Naloxone Pilot which ran from 1 December 2019 to 30 June 2022 can be found here.
