Queensland has a proud history of leading the way for increasing primary healthcare provision through community pharmacy. Queensland community pharmacists have been successfully involved in pilot programs since 2014, when the Queensland Pharmacy Immunisation Pilot commenced, followed by the Urinary Tract Infection Pharmacy Pilot – Queensland in 2020.
Both pilots were quickly accepted as business as usual for community pharmacies and the benefits to Queenslanders of all ages who now have better access to safe and convenient immunisation services, and to Queensland women who can access immediate treatment for uncomplicated UTIs from their local community pharmacist, have been undeniable.
The successes of these pilots have paved the way for the two current pilots, the Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot and the Queensland Community Hormonal Contraception Pilot.
These pilots aim to improve access to high-quality primary healthcare services for Queenslanders. Community pharmacists are highly qualified and trusted members of the healthcare team and providing them with additional clinical training which supports them practising to their full scope will enable them to further help and support their local communities.

In 2020, the Palaszczuk Labor Government made a pre-election commitment to implement a trial of community pharmacists practising to full scope of practice in North Queensland. The Guild is now working hard to formalise the framework and parameters for the pilot.
