Training requirements

Pharmacists are required to successfully complete additional education and training through an accredited education provider to participate in the Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot.

Pharmacists who are already enrolled will be completing their training through either one or two providers, depending upon their start date, to satisfy the pilot training requirements   These are the prescribing component and clinical practice component.

For pharmacists undertaking training from January 2025 onwards, there is one education provider currently offering the full accredited training:

Training commitment

Pharmacists interested in completing the training should be prepared to commit to approximately six months of training in order to complete the course.

Currently, a complete training package is only available through James Cook University, so the following is only a guide of what to expect. Other providers may come to market and have slightly different requirements.

  • Course:
    • Graduate Certificate of Advanced Practice and Prescribing for Pharmacists
      • PC6100 Professional Practice for Pharmacists 1
      • PC6200 Professional Practice for Pharmacists 2
      • PC6300 Safe Prescribing for Pharmacists
  • Study:
    • Pharmacists will be required to attend two face-to-face residentials, one for PC6100 and the second for PC6200.
    • PC6100 Residential – 32 hours over five days.
    • PC6200 Residential – 32 hours over five days.
      • Please note the residential for PC6300 is incorporated into PC6100 and PC6200 residentials.
  • Examination:
  • End of course OSCE
    • The course has an end-of-course 7 station OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination).  3 stations will be conducted online and 4 stations will be conducted face-to-face.

Alternative training providers

It is anticipated that additional training providers will become available into the future.

Training Subsidy

The Australasian College of Pharmacy has been engaged by Queensland Health to manage the distribution of the training subsidy. As the funding distributor, the College will administer training subsidy amounts up to the value of $7,000 per eligible student.

To be eligible for the subsidy the student must:

  • Demonstrate that they hold general or provisional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia with no conditions on practice.
  • Not have previously completed the course or courses nominated in their application.
  • Demonstrate that they are enrolled in an applicable Pilot approved course or courses prior to 31 March 2025.
  • Currently work in a Queensland community pharmacy.
  • Currently reside in the state of Queensland.
