The World Pharmacy Council has announced that Doug Hoey, Chief Executive Officer of the National Community Pharmacy Association of the United States, has been elected as its new president.

Mr Hoey’s election follows the retirement of former National President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, George Tambassis.

Mr Hoey said he was pleased to take over from Mr Tambassis as president of the organisation.

“In his time as our founder president, George led the council in developing its role as an informed, evidence-based voice advocating for community pharmacy internationally, and crucially for exchanging information and perspectives among our member organisations,” Mr Hoey said.

“We have already seen the benefits as community pharmacies in several countries have expanded their services during the COVID-19 pandemic, and shown the vital public health contribution they make.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues to build on the public trust and confidence that exists in pharmacists to improve the healthcare of hundreds of millions of people around the world.”

Mr Hoey has spent more than 20 years working in and representing community pharmacies.

He is a licensed pharmacist in Oklahoma, Virginia, and Texas and practised for five years in community and long-term care settings contributing to the development of expansions into durable medical equipment and home infusion.

For five years, he also developed and taught pharmacology courses at George Washington University and Marymount universities.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors for SureScripts, Mirixa, Pharmacy e‐Health Information Technology, the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board, and Community Pharmacy Financial.

He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and the Oklahoma City University graduate school of business.
