As the festive season approaches, it's all hands on deck for community pharmacies. While some businesses are dialing down, we're ramping up, ensuring our patients get their medications before the holiday hustle. And yes, the "silly season" does bring with it heightened expectations and stress.
This year has come with its challenges, especially with the new 60-day dispensing rules coming in. And pharmacists have been right there at the frontline, navigating these changes.
In the midst of all this, it's crucial not to lose sight of your own well-being. A recent report highlighted that many of us aren't getting the recommended eight hours of sleep. In the report, Dr Adam Fletcher, the CEO of Integrated Safety Support, pointed out the importance of consistent sleep schedules for mental health.
A good workout can also go a long way for mental health! Whether it's a brisk walk or a yoga session, staying active can make a significant impact. As for your diet, consider opting for fresh fruits, veggies, and nuts. They’re not just good for the body but also great for your mental well-being. While the season might tempt you with snacks and more drinks, a bit of moderation can go a long way.
If you ever feel the need for some tips or support, the Mental Health Foundation of Australia has fantastic resources. Plus, the Guild launched an EAP this year to offer assistance for Guild members, whether that's counseling or advice on exercise and diet. Our recent PBCN Podcast explains more about our EAP and how members can access it.
The Guild’s EAP is provided in partnership with TELUS Health and is available for all pharmacy staff to access. This includes pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, technicians and anyone directly employed by the member pharmacy – as well as their immediate family members.
So while you're out there taking care of your patients, don't forget to take a moment for yourself. After all, your well-being matters just as much.
