This Privacy Awareness Week, how will you power up your pharmacy’s privacy?
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia is proud to support Privacy Awareness Week, an annual campaign led by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), which seeks to promote and raise awareness of the importance of protecting personal information.
This year, Privacy Awareness Week focuses on transparency, accountability and security and how they apply regardless of the technology used.
Pharmacies, like many organisations, deal with personal information in their normal business operations. When entrusting patient information to third parties, like software or marketing companies for example, it is important to undertake all the necessary checks and balances into how that service provider will use, store and otherwise engage with that personal information.
Prior to sharing any data, it is important to make sure any third-parties you engage will adhere to privacy laws and maintain high data security standards.
Having a robust contract in place is a way to ensure your pharmacy is not caught up in the unfortunate event of a data breach.
Australian patients are becoming increasingly informed about privacy laws and the responsibility of businesses to safely handle their personal information. There are some simple steps you can take to ensure you know your responsibilities, like knowing who is responsible for privacy in your pharmacy and ensuring you only collect the personal information you need.
