Vapes officially available in community pharmacy, but not everyone’s on board

9 October 2024

As of October 1, vapes have become available in community pharmacies across all states and territories except Tasmania as a Schedule 3 product.

This means that patients over 18 can now purchase vapes without a prescription after a consultation with a pharmacist. This change aims to provide smokers with an alternative to traditional tobacco products; however, it has sparked significant debate among healthcare professionals and the pharmacy community.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has voiced strong objections to this decision, citing concerns over the lack of Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval for vapes. The Guild emphasises the potential health risks associated with vaping, particularly given the rising evidence of adverse effects.

Anthony Tassone, Guild National Vice President and pharmacy owner, has expressed concerns about the implications for patient safety, particularly considering the unknown long-term effects of vaping. Pharmacists are only able to supply a Schedule 3 medicine if there is an established therapeutic need. Without clear understanding of the potential harms, which include risks of cancer, lung scarring, and nicotine addiction, it becomes challenging for pharmacists to make informed decisions.

"We have concerns as a profession about what that means for the long-term safety for our patients," Mr Tassone says.

In response to these concerns, many community pharmacies have chosen not to stock vapes, prioritising patient safety and adhering to established health guidelines.

Pharmacists will play a crucial role in this new landscape, conducting consultations with patients to ensure they are informed about the risks associated with vaping. These consultations are essential for guiding patients in making safer choices, especially as research on vaping continues to evolve.

While the inclusion of vapes in pharmacies aims to support smoking cessation efforts, the lack of regulatory approval and concerns about safety and efficacy highlight the need for caution among healthcare providers.
