Don Gibbons, former Executive Director of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, has reached a remarkable milestone – his 100th birthday. Don was the Executive Director from 1973 to 1981, during a period of significant change for both the Guild and the community pharmacy sector. His leadership laid the groundwork for many of the advancements, community pharmacy takes for granted today.
During his time as Executive Director, Don played a key role in advocating for community pharmacies and small businesses across Australia. One of his biggest achievements was the establishment of the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia, where he served as its first chair. This initiative provided small businesses with a stronger voice and continues to be an essential part of Australia’s small business landscape today.
Under Don’s leadership, the Guild became a more influential advocate for the pharmacy profession. In 1976, he was instrumental in changing the wage determination process, removing the Minister from direct involvement and introducing a joint committee to handle wage decisions, a landmark move that greatly benefited the pharmacy workforce.
Another of Don’s significant contributions was founding the Australian Institute of Pharmacy Management in 1978, which would later evolve into the Australasian College of Pharmacy. His vision also included relocating the Guild’s National Secretariat from Melbourne to Canberra, a strategic move which set up the Guild for many successful decades of Government engagement, and helped solidify its role as a strong advocate for pharmacists across the country.
But Don’s impact goes far beyond policy changes. His mentorship, kindness, and dedication to the profession shaped countless careers and made a lasting difference in the lives of many in the pharmacy community.
His legacy is one of dedication, foresight, and passion for improving the health and wellbeing of Australians.
Happy 100th birthday, Don Gibbons!
