New Government initiatives to ease financial and mental health pressures for small business owners

15 January 2025

Owning and managing a business through tough times can take its toll.  Starting 1 January this year, the Albanese Labor Government is investing almost $11 million to support small business owners.

This funding aims to alleviate financial and mental health pressures through two key programs: the Small Business Debt Helpline and the NewAccess for Small Business Owners program.

Minister for Small Business, Julie Collins, emphasised the importance of these initiatives: “Small business owners and operators are resilient, but we also know some small businesses are doing it tough right now. That’s why this support is so important.”

NewAccess for small business owners

Running a pharmacy can be both exciting and stressful. Without healthy coping strategies, the demands of the business can affect your mental health. The NewAccess program, delivered by Beyond Blue, offers free, confidential mental health coaching to help you break unhelpful thought patterns by recognising the way you think, act, and feel.

This program is designed specifically for small business owners, providing up to six structured sessions via phone or video with a trained mental health coach. These coaches have a background in small business, ensuring they understand the unique challenges you face.

One participant shared their experience: "I was experiencing business-related stress which spilled over into my personal life. By the end of the program, I had no anxiety and had complete confidence in my decision-making.”

Small Business Debt Helpline

The Small Business Debt Helpline, delivered by Financial Counselling Australia, provides free, independent, and confidential phone-based support to small business owners nationwide, regardless of the cause of their financial hardship. This service is crucial for pharmacy owners facing financial difficulties, offering expert advice and support to navigate their financial challenges.

One business owner expressed their gratitude: "I must say it has boosted my confidence and spirit to have [The Small Business Debt Helpline] sending me options. I have spent the last months literally paralyzed in fear, looking at the wall. Today I felt stronger ... hopefully with this new energy, I can get out of my situation."

Small business owners can contact the Small Business Debt Helpline by calling 1800 413 828 or via the Small Business Debt Helpline website.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for Guild members and their staff

In addition to these government initiatives, Guild members, their staff and immediate family members also have access to a free Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This program provides confidential counselling and support services to help with any personal or work-related issues. Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, financial concerns, or any other challenges, the EAP is there to support you and your team.

Remember, it’s okay not to feel okay and it's important to reach out for help. Whether it’s today, or whenever you need it, there is support available for you.
