Nominations are now open for the 2025 Pharmacy Guild of Australia/Maxigesic Pharmacy Assistant of the Year (PATY) Award, and if you’re thinking about putting your name forward, Maddison Waide has one piece of advice: go for it.
Maddison, who took out the 2024 title, says the experience is what truly matters—not just the trophy.
“Winning didn’t matter to me as much as the experience. Just being part of the process was so rewarding, and I came out of it with a stronger sense of self-worth. I was happy just being there with everyone—it was already a win for me.”

PATY has recognised outstanding pharmacy assistants for 19 years, highlighting those who go above and beyond in patient care, leadership, and innovation. It’s an opportunity to grow professionally, connect with like-minded peers, and challenge yourself in new ways.
Maddison’s “Yes, and...” mindset comes from her background in drama, where the golden rule of improvisation is to always build on an opportunity.

That approach has shaped her pharmacy career, leading her to be part of Australia’s first drone delivery trial, work with a first-of-its-kind blister packing robot, and develop a sleep apnoea program that she hopes to grow.
“Being part of such forward-thinking projects shows that pharmacy assistants can play a much bigger role in healthcare.”
