“We are delighted to celebrate the first anniversary of services provided under the Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot,” Mr Owen said.
“This initiative has - and will continue to be - a game-changer for our health care system, empowering community pharmacists to deliver high-quality care to their patients. We look forward to building on this success and driving further innovation in health care delivery.”
The Pilot builds on the long-standing role of Queensland community pharmacists as trusted providers of accessible primary care, including the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the delivery of a broad range of vaccination services.
Queenslanders trust their local community pharmacy as a first point of contact for essential health needs, and the Pilot has expanded this role to include the management of a wider range of acute, everyday conditions, enhanced medication support, and expanded preventative health services.
Since its launch, the Pilot has delivered great results. At the 2025 Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference and Trade Exhibition (APP2025) in March, the Hon. Tim Nicholls, Queensland Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, announced that the 16 acute, everyday conditions included in the Pilot will become permanent from 1 July 2025. This decision underscores the Government’s confidence in the Pilot’s safety, and effectiveness in improving health care accessibility and patient outcomes across Queensland.
“In just one year, this pioneering initiative has transformed health care delivery in Queensland,” Mr Owen said.
“The Pilot has expanded the roles and responsibilities of community pharmacists, enabling them to provide a broader range of services and significantly enhance patient care.”
The Pilot has assisted Queenslanders, no matter where they live, to access essential health care services. With 97% of metropolitan residents living within 2.5 kilometres of a community pharmacy, and 83% of people in regional areas within 5 kilometres, community pharmacies have proven to be accessible and trusted health care destinations. By bringing timely care closer to communities, these advancements are easing the pressure on other healthcare sections while empowering patients with more choice and convenience.
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our sincere thanks to both the current and former Queensland governments, the dedicated health care professionals, patients, and partners who have contributed to the success of the Pilot. Together, we are shaping the future of health care in Queensland and ensuring that every community receives the care it deserves.
