Queensland patients should not see fee increases on GP visits following end of payroll tax stoush

8 February 2023

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland Branch President, Chris Owen:

“We welcome the decision made today by the Treasurer, Cameron Dick ending the GPs ongoing threat of increasing patient fees due to Queensland’s payroll tax law.

“The government’s decision to implement a payroll tax holiday will mean most of the tax savings will go to large corporate medical practices not your smaller, local general practitioners.

“The Guild has long supported a model of care where practitioners own practices not large corporate interests.

“We are pleased the government has not wavered and changed the payroll tax laws but allowed time for GPs to comply. We look forward to seeing no patient fee increases until mid-2025.

“This solution maintains a level playing field for the many hard-working health professions, like Dentists, Physios, Chiropractors and Community Pharmacies who are already complying with the legislation and paying their fair share.

“This is a sensible solution made today by the Treasurer,” says Chris Owen.
