There has recently been a significant shift in the awareness and management of Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), leading to increased accessibility to effective treatments. Community pharmacies have become essential points of care for individuals seeking relief from GORD symptoms. Pharmacies are open on weekends and positioned in convenient locations, offering a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) treatments and expert advice.

GORD is one of the most common community pharmacy presentations and affects up to 15% of the Australian population, particularly in high-risk group individuals (i.e. those living with obesity) 1. Presenting symptoms often include heartburn and regurgitation 2. Current guidelines suggest the importance of lifestyle and dietary modifications such as avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and maintaining a healthy weight, to help reduce the frequency and severity of reflux episodes 3,4. For unresolved symptoms, pharmacists can recommend a 7- to 14-day supply of standard doses of antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for the treatment of uncomplicated GORD symptoms if appropriate 2,3. It is crucial to also explain the correct dosage and potential side effects of these medications to patients to ensure safe and effective management.

As full scope of practice for community pharmacists continues to be realised, the quality of patient care will be further enhanced. This ensures that individuals suffering from GORD receive timely and effective access and treatment at their local community pharmacy.

As pharmacists play an increasingly vital role in managing GORD, staying updated through continued education is essential. The Australasian College of Pharmacy offers valuable CPD, short courses, and resources through its Student Membership. Visit www.acp.edu.au to enhance your skills, remain current and informed.
