Guild welcomes interstate prescription reform

The Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia has welcomed the Tasmanian Government’s announcement to allow community pharmacists to fill scripts issued by interstate medical practitioners from early 2025.

Tasmanian Branch President Joe O’Malley acknowledged the work of the inquiry into the assessment and treatment of ADHD and support services in making the case for this reform.

“The Guild thanks the inquiry committee for highlighting the relevant issues and bringing new evidence that resulted in the Deputy Premier’s announcement.”

Mr O’Malley said the Tasmanian restrictions had been a source of frustration for health consumers for a long time and the reform was overdue.

“We have been advocating for change in this area for years now, and we welcome the announcement of this commonsense reform from the Tasmanian Government.

“Tasmanians who receive medical care from interstate practitioners, as well as visitors and recent arrivals who need access to medications, have been left frustrated and shaking their heads while trying to get their scripts filled.

“These changes will result in better healthcare – making sure people can get their medications safely and efficiently – and we look forward to working with the Government on the legislation.”

Mr O’Malley emphasised that any changes would be implemented in a way that was safe for patients.

“Community pharmacists are highly trained health professionals and Tasmanians can be assured medications will continue to be provided to them safely. Pharmacists review scripts in line with best clinical practice, and ensure any script can be filled safely and effectively.”

Mr O’Malley also welcomed the Government’s commitment to a comprehensive review of the Poisons Act 1971.

“This is a very old Act and we know it needs to be updated. The Guild looks forward to being engaged through the consultation process when it commences next year,” Mr O’Malley said.
